BMW i5 Saloon - an all electric saloon, and not a SUV

BMW i5 Saloon - an all electric saloon, and not a SUV
Posted On By Every Vehicle Lease

The BMW i5 eDrive40 Saloon is the all-electric iteration of BMW's renowned 5 Series, offering a blend of performance, luxury, and sustainability. Priced from £74,000 in the UK, the i5 eDrive40 is positioned as a premium executive saloon and for those familiar with the older 520d and 520i engines, this is a big upgrade in performance and technology.

Performance and Range

Equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 335bhp and 400Nm of torque, the i5 eDrive40 accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 6.0 seconds. Its 81.2kWh battery provides a claimed range of up to 356 miles, though real-world conditions may yield slightly less. The car we tested on 20" M aero 939M BiColour Black Grey alloy wheels had a charge range of 280 miles in efficiency mode at 90% of battery capacity. On the 40, the official electric consumption is 16.4 kWh/100km.

Charging Capabilities

The i5 supports DC rapid charging up to 205kW, enabling a 10-80% charge in approximately 30 minutes.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the i5 features a modern, uncluttered design with a dual curved widescreen infotainment system running BMW's latest operating system. Standard amenities include 'Veganza' faux leather upholstery, heated electric front seats, and wireless smartphone charging. The cabin offers generous space, with a 490-litre boot capacity. You can see how BMW have progressed with its interior over the last decade, something that Audi should consider doing on their equivalent S-Line interior seats which haven't changed much. The new drive modes are well thought out, you can drive like on a race track in Sport mode, enjoy the space-age sounds in Expressive mode, or get the best economy in Efficiency mode, other modes are available as well, including Digital Art.

Trim Levels

The UK lineup includes the M Sport trim as standard, featuring sportier styling and 19-inch alloy wheels. The M Sport Pro variant adds 20-inch wheels and additional body styling, including the beautiful BMW Iconic Glow (looks awesome at night time) and a really good quality Harman/Kardon Surround Sound Audio System. For enhanced performance, the M60 xDrive M Performance model offers increased power and adaptive suspension.

Conculsion

It doesn't feel as big as the older 5 Series from a decade ago, plus the driver's position is lower (almost coupe-like) but is a superb car. The BMW i5 eDrive40 Saloon stands out in the executive electric vehicle segment, this new electric performance is something we should all experience. Its has luxury (a stunning cabin), range (ideal for anyone doing less than 17000 miles per annum who charges at home) and the BMW iDrive Operating 8.5 infotainment system even allows the kids to play games when the car is stationary.

Buy or Lease

It is a higher price point and, as per all electric cars at present, depreciation is high, so we always recommend you lease - there are regular super lease deals available at certain points in the year so get in touch if you want to be notified when the next deals come on board.
