Volkswagen has unveiled its latest electric marvel, the ID7 Tourer, set to hit the market in the latter part of this year. Positioned as the brand's inaugural electric estate car, the ID7 Tourer is poised to compete with the BMW i5 Touring and the upcoming Audi A6 E-tron Avant.

Built on the foundation of the ID7 Saloon, this electric estate measures 4961mm in length, 1862mm in width, and stands at 1536mm tall. While sharing proportional similarities with the ID7 Saloon, it distinguishes itself by being shorter, wider, and taller than the forthcoming VW Passat, serving as an electric alternative to the popular model.

The ID7 Tourer will be available in two trims at launch: the Tourer Pro equipped with a 77kWh battery, boasting a 10-80% charging time of approximately 28 minutes, and the range-topping Pro S featuring an 86kWh battery with a WLTP range of 426 miles, making it the electric estate with the longest range currently available. Both versions are powered by Volkswagen's advanced APP550 electric motor, delivering 282bhp and 402 lb ft of torque on the rear axle, promising a brisk 0-62mph time of just under 7.0 seconds. A high-performance, four-wheel-drive GTX variant is expected to join the lineup in the future.

Volkswagen describes the ID7 Tourer as a fusion of a classic estate and a dynamic shooting brake, resulting in a sleek and versatile design. The rear's increased height allows for a spacious luggage compartment with a volume of up to 605 litres (rear seat backrest in cargo position), expanding to an impressive 1,714 litres when loaded up to the roof and front seat backrests.

Inside the cabin, the ID7 features a 15-inch infotainment system screen, an augmented reality head-up display, and an innovative air conditioning operating concept integrated into the top level of the infotainment system. Technological enhancements include a panoramic sunroof with smart glass, offering touch-controlled transitions between opaque and transparent settings, as well as Climatronic front seats with cooling, heating, and drying functions.

While UK pricing is yet to be disclosed, expectations suggest a premium starting point of around £55,000 compared to the saloon version. Travel Assist technology, supporting assisted lane changing on multi-lane motorways at speeds above 56mph, adds another layer of sophistication to the ID7 Tourer. Pre-sales are scheduled to kick off in Q1, with the official launch slated for later in the summer.
